Bring in a pro

It’s always a great time to bring in a speaker. Why not task your Quill and Scroll chapter with finding a speaker and organizing a visit? Have them brainstorm on an area for improvement and then search for local journalists (or nonlocal if they are able) to come and talk about the topic.

Quill and Scroll Guiding Principles:

Truth, Learning, Leadership, Loyalty, Initiative, Integrity, Judgment, Friendship

Materials:

Computer with internet access

Set up:

None

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Ask students to identify an area of interest or for improvement on student media. Have them identify these topics.
  2. Ask them what local speaker they would like to either invite in person or virtually. Ask if anyone has a connection to the person. (Are they a neighbor, friend of a parent or guardian, etc.?)
  3. Ask students to craft invites for each of these speakers. This will allow you to have a request ready if the first person declines.
  4. Once the speaker is secured, select a student leader and then have the chapter members brainstorm and prioritize questions.

For example, some chapters invited journalists ranging from a news writer, ombudsman, photographer and a review writer. At one point, we had a state senator join us.

Have the student brainstorm and prioritize questions after the speaker is secured as well.
