2025 WVM is open for entries!
Enter now, pay later if you choose; 54 categories are available
Below is a complete list of the categories for the 2025 Contest. The entry deadline is Feb. 5 at midnight. The fee for all entries is $8 for the 2025 contest. To enter, follow the instructions provided and only include one URL or folder/PDF link per individual entry.
This is an all-digital contest. Entries (website links, PDFs of pages and/or JPGs of photos) will be stored online, and you will share either the live link to the content or the URLs of those spreads, images or folders containing multiple files on the entry spreadsheet. Since the work must be published, we will not accept Google docs as writing entries. Work must have been published between Feb. 2, 2024 and Feb. 5, 2025.
The contest is undergoing some exciting changes this year. It has been renamed the Writing, Visual, Multimedia contest to better reflect design-based categories. There are also three new middle school categories: Middle School Writing, Middle School Visual and Middle School Multimedia.
The winning entries from our News Writer of the Year (category 16) will now be eligible to compete for a School of the New York Times scholarship to its Summer Academy. This scholarship (valued at $7,500) includes room and board but not transportation to New York City. Student entries will be evaluated by faculty from the New York Times.
How to Enter
- Make a copy of this Google spreadsheet.
- Rename it “School_WVM2025.” For example, Shawnee Mission North should call it “ShawneeMissionNorth_WVM2025.”
- Replace the text “School Name,” “Adviser Name,” “School Address” and “Adviser Email” with the appropriate information. No entry is complete without all four pieces of information. Please complete this information as you would like for it to appear on a certificate.
- Use the dropdown menu in cell G6 to choose your payment method. The cells in column E will calculate the total. If you intend to pay with a credit card please use this form. If you would like to use a purchase order or check, please use this form. (If this is the only reason you are using the online form, there’s no need to pay for shipping.) You will receive an invoice when you place the order. The WVM entry area is toward the bottom of the payment form.
- Starting with Line 8, in Column A, type in the student or students’ name(s) for the entry.
- In Column B, use the dropdown menu to choose the category for each entry.
- In Column C, paste in the URL live link or the file/folder of the entry. Each entry requires its own URL. DO NOT SUBMIT a story’s Google doc or a single URL with all of your school’s entries in a single folder. Please make sure the link is accessible to anyone with the link — if you are sharing a PDF or folder through Google, check the sharing settings.
- In Column E, only if necessary, you may include a note for judges to consider when reviewing your entry.
- When you have entered all of the entries for your school, please share your entry sheet with [email protected]. The final deadline is Feb. 5, 2025.
- If you need to edit the sheet after your initial share, please let [email protected] know of any alterations or additions you’ve made on the sheet. However, the final deadline does not change. This is important — we will upload your entries when you share the initial document. We send a confirmation email after we upload your entries.
- You may also call Quill and Scroll at (612) 200-9295 for help.
- Schools may pay for contest entries using either our online credit card payment option or check or purchase order payment. The WVM entry area is toward the bottom of the payment form.
Judging
Judges will award first, second and third places in each category for each class, and they’ll award honorable mentions so that between 10 and 15 percent of all entries are recognized in every category. All students named as award recipients will be eligible to apply for Quill and Scroll student scholarships in May of their senior year.
Quill and Scroll administrators will then tally points (5 for first place, 4 for second, 3 for third and 1 for HM) to determine a Blue and Gold Award winner for each class, as well as three places in each of the subheadings — Writing, Photo and Multimedia. Last year’s overall winner was McCallum High School in Texas.
Quill and Scroll hopes to announce winners by the end of March.
Here’s a complete list of last year’s winners.
