Shawnee Mission North and Christ Presbyterian earn top overall awards

Shawnee Mission North High School of Overland Park, Kansas in Class A and Christ Presbyterian Academy of Nashville, Tennessee in Class B have won the overall Blue and Gold Awards in the 2021 Quill and Scroll Yearbook Excellence Contest, co-sponsored by Walsworth, Balfour, Herff Jones and Jostens.

The Blue and Gold Staff Excellence Award goes to the yearbook staff in each class that earned the most points via its individual entries. Here are the top three schools in each class:

Class A (1,000 students or more)

Staff Excellence

  1. Shawnee Mission North, Overland Park, Kansas

Class B (999 students or fewer)

Staff Excellence

  1. Christ Presbyterian Academy, Nashville, Tennessee

In addition, the YEC awards the top performing staffs in three separate areas: Design, Writing and Photography. Here are those winners:

Design:

Class A:

  • James Bowie High School, Austin, Texas
  • Shawnee Mission North, Overland Park, Kansas
  • Whitney High School, Rocklin, California

Class B:

  • Richland R-1, Essex, Missouri

Judges perused 1,485 entries to determine the winners in each category and class. In all, 211 entries were judged as winners, meaning first, second or third place, or honorable mention. In categories with more than 30 entries in a class, judges chose honorable mention winners to equal at least 10 percent of the entries in that category’s class. In two Class B categories with fewer than 10 entries, judges used their discretion to not award a third place. The total number of entries per category is pasted as a spreadsheet at the end of this post.

All winners — first, second and third places, as well as honorable mentions — are eligible to apply for Quill and Scroll scholarships, provided the students plan to pursue a journalism major or work in student media at the university or college they attend.
