Nine schools awarded prestigious Gallup Award in 2021 contest
21 others honored with International First Place in annual critique service
By Sylvia Clubb
Judges named nine school publications as George H. Gallup recipients in the 2021 Quill and Scroll News Media Evaluation service.
Named for the founder of Quill and Scroll and the Gallup Poll, the award is given only to those publications that achieved and sustained excellence during the 2020-2021 academic year. Gallup Award recognition is based on extraordinary improvement, exceptional service to the school and community, editorial campaigns, and in-depth reporting on special issues.
International First Place Award recognition went to 21 schools. The International Second Place Award was awarded to six schools.
News Media Evaluation and Gallup Award
The News Media Evaluation provides media staffs a one-of-a-kind assessment of your publication(s) with constructive comments and suggestions for improvement from qualified evaluators. Judges will provide a thorough analysis and rating to schools, and the evaluation exercise and feedback are instructive and developmental.
High schools and junior high/middle schools may enter their multimedia news operations, newspapers, news magazines and/or online news sites until June 15, 2021. Entries and ratings are returned in early September 2021. This service is open to non-member schools as well as member schools.
Note: Instead of sending in printed versions of your publication, you may send in PDFs of the publication. The instructions were updated February 19, 2021. The registration form has been simplified from past years, making it easier for you to enter.
You may download the full 2021 instructions (PDF) and the 2021 Registration Form (DOCX) by clicking the yellow buttons on the right. You may also review the 2021 judging form (PDF) by downloading it. This video will help you with entering the contest:

Judge’s comment: “The Crier is solidly issue-based, providing a great service for helping students make sense of the world. You show a great deal of compassion for your fellow students and a great deal of courage in addressing tough issues like consent.”
This is the best critique (in terms of specific things to work on and suggestions to keep on going) that my students have ever gotten, ever. My staff is STILL benefiting from that critique. It’s shaped much of our philosophy in coverage and some of design for this year! So, thank you so so much.
